SMCA Rink Rat volunteers maintain two outdoor rinks within our community, that allow families, friends, grass root sports all to come together – a recreational / pleasure rink (no boards) & a boarded hockey rink (with basketball nets).
Guidelines and Rules
- The SMCA is not responsible for loss or injury to rink users or damaged property
- The rinks are for all ages & abilities – please be considerate of all other users
- No rink access during ice resurfacing / clearing, when signs posted, or when is locked/closed off
- Shooting and hockey played inside the hockey rink & its surface only
- No hockey pucks at the hockey rink before 4pm on school days (to avoid accidental damage to cars beside MNA school)
- City bylaws apply at all times – including but not limited to public alcohol consumption, drug use & quiet times
- During winter, the lights go out automatically at approximatley 10pm – please leave the rink when the lights go off
- All our rinks are maintained by volunteers – please clean up after yourself and be respectful
To support us, we do ask you to consider a family / household membership be purchased on an annual basis to help with the upkeep of the two rinks. Community group & local school rental inquiries can be sent to info@sandstonemacewan.com.

Please Consider Volunteering as a Rink Rat:
- There is no time commitment – we ask people to simply donate the time when they are able to do so.
- Flooding typically occurs every other day at 9 p.m., with additional 9 a.m. sessions on some weekend mornings.
- We maintain a sign-up sheet listing the times when volunteers are needed at the rink. Anyone who is free can add their name—it’s as simple as that!
- Duties may include shoveling snow, using gas-powered sweepers or snow blowers, and using or rolling up hoses. You can choose which tasks you’re comfortable doing.
- We love showing new volunteers how we keep the rink going all winter long—new helping hands are always welcome – all we really ask is that you like being outside in the winter and are ready to have some fun!
