Update on West Runway Rehabilitation Project – September 16, 2024
With the end of summer and seemingly quick beginning of fall, here’s an update on the West Runway Rehabilitation project at YYC Calgary International Airport.
Phase 2 has lasted most of the summer and has officially ended this week with the project now entering Phase 3. With the ending of Phase 2, the Crosswind Runway has been reopened to flight operations. This means that three total runways are operational at this time, with the shortened West Runway still available for utilization. It is important to note that runway utilization is the responsibility of NAV Canada, and they determine which runways to use at certain times based on safety and operational efficiency.
During Phase 3 (expected from September to November 2024), construction crews will work to finish the northern section of the West Runway in anticipation of it being fully operational over the winter months. Phase 4 is the final phase for the 2024 construction season and will see the West Runway fully closed while we recertify the runway for full use.
This could result in be more air traffic over our neighbourhoods this fall. If you would like to learn more about the West Runway Rehabilitation project, please visit YYC’s Major Project’s website or WestRunway@yyc.com.
Background
In 2023, the YYC Calgary International Airport welcomed a record breaking 18.5 million passengers Calgary, and brought endless Calgarians home or visitors into our city. To the Sandstone MacEwan community, the airport is better known to be a stones throw away – less than 15-20 minutes drive. This periodically results in air traffic taking off or landing over the SMCA communities depending on the direction of the wind, runway closures or other events.
SMCA in its role as facilicator and community partner receives updates periodically from the Airport Authority regarding impacting projects or closures, and we pass these along to our community using social media channels or email newsletters.
